The islet of Saint-Cassian is a protected natural site on the flood-prone banks of the Garonne. It has been classified as a “Sensitive Natural Area” for its fauna, and in particular a colony of herons. Indeed, this wetland, a remnant of a dead arm of the Garonne, is very popular with birds and several species of herons come to breed there.
This nesting site is therefore not accessible all year round to protect the species concerned. At certain times, you can nevertheless contemplate them discreetly, from an educational path, where there are observation points. It is accessible from the departmental road D26, at the exit of the village of Mas-Grenier. An information panel allows you to better understand the importance of the heronry and the preservation of this fragile environment.
