On sunny days, what could be nicer than taking your bicycle and going for a walk? Montech in the Tarn-et-Garonne is an ideal starting point for bike rides. In addition to visiting the village, get in the saddle and enjoy sublime landscapes. The three strong points of Montech are the green way of the lateral canal to the Garonne, the green way of the Canal de Montech and the forest of Agre. Several possibilities are therefore available to you and your bicycle. You can choose a bike ride along the water, following the different canals and taking advantage of the old towpaths, or a shaded outing in a wooded environment.

Stroll along the canals

We can sometimes get lost on the different terminologies, so here's a little reminder:

  • The Montech canal: this connects Montech to Montauban
  • Canal lateral to the Garonne: it connects Toulouse and the Gironde (and passes through Montech)
  • The Canal du Midi: this is the part connecting Sète to Toulouse
  • The Canal des Deux-Mers: it represents the sum of the lateral canal to the Garonne and the Canal du Midi. To summarize, it connects the Atlantic (Gironde estuary) and the Mediterranean Sea.

From Montech, you can therefore drive along the side canal à la Garonne or the canal de Montech. This last part is barely a dozen kilometers to its destination: the canal port of Montauban.

As for the side channel, again you have a choice. Either head north and cycle towards Moissac, or head south and cross the villages of Grisolles and Castelnau in the direction of Toulouse.

Walk along the canal as a couple, with friends or with family and pedal on the old towpath

If you turn towards Moissac, you will come across very colorful information panels at the start of your path. They are part of the incredible and no less shimmering scenography linked to a unique feature in France and in the world: the water slope.

The good idea Read our article on discovering the village of Moissac (fr).

Whatever circuit you take, rest assured, there is no difficulty. You can definitely plan these family outings. The difference in height is almost nonexistent, and the routes are very well laid out and secure. In addition, the markup is clear and precise.

You will appreciate the tranquility of the walk and the paths lined with pretty plane trees. You will probably come across a few barges or other small pleasure boats. With a little luck, you will even be able to observe the passage of a lock.

Welcome to the national forest of Agre

A true lung of greenery, the forest of Agre, also called the forest of Montech, is the largest wooded area in Tarn-et-Garonne. It is a remarkable site where it is good to walk. Especially since a botanical trail was created by the Municipal Youth Council. Go in search of the 26 desks scattered here and there along the course. They will inform you about the different plant species present, and their characteristics, as well as about the fauna that you may come across if you know how to be discreet and observant... and if you are lucky!

Again no technical difficulty. The paths are well marked and maintained. Considered as a plain forest, its slopes are really minimal (4%), which makes it a place to walk without technical complexity. It is possible to get around with a city bike (photo support!), But if you are a little more adventurous and have a more suitable bike (VTC or mountain bike), you will easily find a few more paths or passages. tortuous for fun and let off steam.
