Just ten minutes north of Albi is Cagnac-les-Mines and hardly further, Carmaux, the two towns are linked by the exploitation of coal between 1886 and 1983. A few years after the exploitation of the mines, the Municipality of Cagnac-les-Mines seizes the site and decides to establish there a place of memory of this exploitation. In 1990 the museum opened its doors; since 2007, it has been managed by the Department, which has invested more than 5 million euros in renovations. Today it is one of the most important museums in the region.
In the open air, Cagnac-les-Mines also has great things to offer such as a fishing lake, a leisure and adventure park (Cap Découverte).
