Laguépie, a village on a hill

Laguépie is a water village (but it is not crossed by the Tarn or the Garonne!), it is divided by the Viaur until the emergence of a bridge at the end of the 19th century . The village houses, which are often quite high, are built around waterways and the town benefited from numerous hotels at its peak in the 19th and 20th centuries. Often, businesses were built in front.

Get a map of the town from the Tourist Office so you can walk around it, knowing all the information you need to know about the houses and interesting elements of the village. You can also just walk along the sandstone streets, don't hesitate to go up to the heights to enjoy a beautiful view of the whole.

Laguépie developed through trade, thanks to its station which made it possible to transport food, but also the region's products necessary for the economy: lime, wool, cereals... The old grain market is the testimony of this rich commercial past. The church of Laguépie is recent, it is in neo-Gothic style and in the center of the village, while an older one was on the heights of the hill. It is on these heights that you will enjoy a pretty viewpoint, to take in the whole of Laguépie.

A second beautifully flowered bridge crosses the Aveyron, it also participated in the emancipation of the village, it is contemporary with the station (end of the 19th century ). A little further on you will see an old mill on the Aveyron, from the 18th century. It is interesting to note that it was transformed into an electrical factory which was used to electrify the village at the beginning of the 20th century. Continue walking towards the Viaur. In summer, a swimming area is set up and delights residents and visitors. It's a refreshing and lively place, with riverside cafes and a happy atmosphere!

The Château de Laguépie

The Castle, which is on the other bank of the Viaur, dates from the 11th century. The Château de Saint-Martin de Laguépie has been open to the public since 2006. Traces of human habitation go back a long time in Laguépie, its castle has been home to a Lord since the 12th century. Destroyed during the Albigensian Crusade, the city was rebuilt because its strategic position was interesting. It still suffered the horrors of the wars of religion and its castle, once again razed, served as a stone quarry for the houses of the village from the 18th century . The castle is today the property of the Laguépie Town Hall, and the inhabitants of the village created the Lou Viel Castel association to preserve this local heritage and promote it. It can be visited in summer and during certain one-off events. The fruit of the visits is used for the large-scale renovation, to consolidate it. Visits are free and open, with a tour guide.

On the last Sunday in October, don't miss the Laguépie Chestnut Fair, the Castle is open for these celebrations!
