Map of Tarn-et-Garonne, The Hillsides of Gascony

Gascony, this ancient and large province in the southwest of France, has its small part in Tarn-et-Garonne, in the form of a natural region: Lomagne. Pretty sunny hillsides, lands conducive to cultivation... Here, long live the sweetness of life ! Bastides and green hills, always a small producer to meet... This is a part of the department that is attractive due to its proximity to Gers and Haute-Garonne. You will thus benefit from several destinations in one, a nature and gourmet vacation !

Lavit

Welcome to Lavit-de-Lomagne. From Lomagne? Yes! It is an ancient region, shared between the nearby Gers department and Tarn-et-Garonne. Also called " Little French Tuscany ", because of its mild and clement climate, it was an important commercial crossroads. This is the territory of white garlic, a quality product, which comes from the generous, sunny lands, nestled between hillsides and valleys of this beautiful region. Beautiful country houses, churches, houses of character... There are many attractions there. Lavit is quite representative of this spirit of good living.

To learn more about Lomagne, don't miss a visit to La Maison de la Lomagne in Lavit. A permanent exhibition is well illustrated to understand life in the heart of this viscounty. Pass by the Saint-Jacques church with its 27-meter rectangular bell tower. The Lavit Town Hall is a beautiful architectural piece , dating from 1840. The Hall, all in ironwork, has 32 cast iron columns.

For walking and strolling, the small park and the large park open their gates to you.

Tips and good deals from the Tarn Aveyron Guide in Lavit:

  • Campers can stay at the municipal campsite, located on the hillsides.
  • There are plenty of hiking trails available, via marked trails.
  • A private swimming pool is open for use by families and travelers, summer and winter (with a removable roof): the Barradis swimming pool.

Beaumont-de-Lomagne

A beautiful bastide dating from 1276, Beaumont-de-Lomagne is a town that thrives thanks to its fairs and agricultural markets. It is also renowned for the region's white garlic. It is home to pretty private mansions and charming brick houses. Funnily enough, with the turmoil of history, the town has been part of Haute-Garonne and now Tarn-et-Garonne since 1802. Beaumont-de-Lomagne is undoubtedly a pleasant holiday destination, both for its cultural and local wealth of interest, and for its geographical position for exploring the surrounding area.

  • Take a stroll through Beaumont-de-Lomagne to discover the massive Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption church. Its 50-metre octagonal bell tower, typical of Toulouse, required over 90 years of work to build.
  • The 14th century Halle houses the market on Saturday mornings.
  • To see beautiful buildings, head to La Maison Fermat which houses the media library, the Hôtel Toureilh where the Town Hall is located, La Maison du Seigneur d'Argombat and its half-timbered buildings, the Hôtel de Ruble, the Maison Molas, the Maison Jean 1er d'Armagnac, the Cordeliers, etc.
  • Architecture lovers, stop by the tourist office to get a map and locate these beautiful residences and the others (numerous) in the town.

And what about garlic ? It is an age-old condiment with proven healing properties. It is a killer of all kinds of bacteria, a very effective dewormer, an antiseptic and apparently a powerful stimulant of the immune system.

On the markets, you can find it in beautifully braided sheaves, in cloves, candied or as a condiment in delicious cooked preparations. Lomagne alone supplies around 12,000 tonnes of white garlic per year.

To celebrate garlic in Lomagne, go to the Garlic Festival in July! This celebration brings together up to 15,000 people each year and no vampires! ;).

Tips and good deals from the Tarn Aveyron Guide to Beaumont-de-Lomagne:

Gramont

In the far west of the Tarn-et-Garonne department, on the border of Gers, there is Gramont. On the banks of the Arrats River, it is a small town of less than 150 souls which is home to a beautiful Renaissance castle, gracefully perched on the hills facing Gascony. It dates from the 13th century.

The visit is free every 1st Sunday of the month, as it is a national monument.

Gramont is a pleasant stopover, rich in beautiful visits. Stroll to discover the pretty houses of the village which, initially, were built to accommodate the house staff of the owners of the castle.

Tips and good deals from the Tarn Aveyron Guide to Gramont:

  • A beautiful marked walking trail offers you a tour of the village in about 1 hour to discover its wonders. A great family walk.
  • Don't miss a visit to the Honey Museum to learn all about the life of bees, beekeeping and hives around the world. Honey tasting at the end of the visit.
