    • The Millau viaduct, a must-see site in Aveyron

If you take the A75 motorway between Clermont-Ferrand and Béziers, you will have the chance to cross the famous Millau viaduct, an impressive work not to be missed. The opportunity to stop at the Millau viaduct area, accessible to traffic in both directions, to be discovered all year round. Take the time to take a break, and come admire this incredible giant work.

The Millau viaduct, a technical and human feat to visit in Aveyron

Incredible but true, the construction of this unique bridge lasted only 3 years ! A feat when we know the technical challenges of the design of this multi-stayed structure, which fits perfectly into the landscape of the Grands Causses. At the origin of the project, 3000 workers and two men who work together for the success of this ambitious adventure: the engineer Michel Virlogeux and the architect Lord Norman Foster. The first stone was laid on December 14, 2001, with an inauguration 3 years later to the day by the President of the Republic Jacques Chirac. You count well! This year, the Millau viaduct is celebrating its 20th anniversary, an opportunity for its teams to put together a special program for you. Every two years, a running race is also organized on the motorway, an additional boon this year since the Eiffage Race of the Millau Viaduct in Aveyron takes place on September 22, 2024, to the great pleasure of athletes and residents.

The Millau viaduct area, a tourist site to discover

Look up and admire the Millau viaduct, with its sailboat-like appearance and its monumental pylons which rise above the Valley. Take a break at the rest area, which has outdoor games for children, an agility area for dogs, Wi-Fi and picnic tables. Then pass through the gate of an old farm Caussenarde which hosts the Viaduc Expo, a free museum space open all year round. The scenography is incredible, punctuated with testimonies, anecdotes and new images on the construction of the bridge, a real immersion into the conditions of its development. Guided tours are also offered by reservation as well as a breathtaking view of the structure by going up to the belvedere, while the shop offers a large selection of souvenirs. Also take the time to treat yourself: the Espace Gourmand offers pancakes filled with local products and sweet snacks. Tourist site and unique site, the Millau viaduct is an essential place to discover in Aveyron.

Close to centre. The underground csr park is directly opposite hotel and cheaper and easier to get into than the hotel car car park which is small and difficult to park in. Hotel staff were great and spoke enough English. Nice quiet location very close to town centre, had a lovely old courtyard garden

Fabulous bit of engineering but not marketed as a tourist attraction. There is supposed to be a viewing spot but we followed the sign(s) but never found it. We pulled over underneath and got some photos. Then driving over it is a 20-40km loop from there.

The Millau Viaduct, completed in 2004, soars 336.4 meters above the Tarn Valley in Southern France, making it the world's tallest bridge. Designed by engineer Michel Virlogeux and architect Norman Foster, this engineering marvel offers breathtaking views and showcases modern design at its finest.
