Montaigu de Quercy through the centuries

There is very little information about the Château de Montaigu de Quercy, which probably dates from the 12th century. Nevertheless, we know that it was erected at the request of the Count of Toulouse (Raymond V), to defend against the Dukes of Aquitaine, in particular Richard Coeur de Lion.

Above all, we recognize its strategic position between Agenais and Quercy. This one will have earned him to be destroyed by the English during the Hundred Years War (in 1418 precisely). It was then rebuilt, then again targeted by the attackers during the Wars of Religion and the Revolution. It will finally be demolished around 1830 and just like in Penne, the stones will be used by the inhabitants for the construction of their own residence. In 1972, an incredible private residence (and not open to visitors) was built on the site of the old castle. Only the surrounding wall remains.

Did you know ? Did you know? For the little anecdote, know, first of all, that Montaigu de Quercy was not always called that. Indeed, until the French Revolution, the town bore the name of Montaigu en Agenais. This change is linked to the change of French territories. In 1808, the Tarn-et-Garonne was born, and Montaigu en Agenais became Montaigu de Quercy.

Some sites to discover during a walk in Montaigu de Quercy

Take the time to stroll through the alleys of this pretty little city which will reveal its most beautiful assets to you.

  • The church: You should know that the parish church was the chapel of the castle. It is the concordat of 1801 which will be at the origin of this radical change. In 1892, it was enlarged and in 1914, it was decided to demolish one of the pinnacles. The latter represented too great a risk for the neighboring houses.
