The picturesque medieval town of Castelnau-de-Montmiral

As its name suggests, Castelnau-de-Montmiral is a former castelnau. But, concretely, what does this mean? It was, during the Middle Ages, a city built by a lord and dependent on the castle of this one. This was erected by Raymond VII, Count of Toulouse, during the first half of the 13th century (in 1222, precisely).

In 1271, the city became part of the royal domain.

During the Hundred Years War, the English, although very close, did not dare to confront Castelnau-de-Montmiral and thus spared it.

During the Wars of Religion, the city welcomed Catholics fleeing Gaillac and Protestantism.

Unfortunately, the castle which dominated the city was destroyed during the Revolution, and never rebuilt. On the other hand, the medieval city once included several gates. Today, you can still pass under the Porte des Garrics, which has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1927. The latter was one of the last vestiges of the old rampart that surrounded the picturesque city.
